Space Race

Doing a simple task like attaching a bolt is a challenge for a ’naut working outside a spacecraft. Try this activity to see what it might be like to do chores in space.

What You Need

• 1 Lifesaver
• Piece of string, 30 cm long
• 4 pieces of LEGO
• Pad of Post-It Notes
• Pencil
• Sheet of paper
• Envelope
• Gloves (winter or gardening)
• Timer or watch with a second hand

What to Do

1. Place the items on a table in four stations:

• Station 1: Lifesaver and string

• Station 2: LEGO

• Station 3: Post-It Notes and pencil

• Station 4: Paper and envelope

2. Put on the gloves. It’s time for work! Read through the tasks below. When you are ready to start, have an adult time you.

• Station 1: String one Lifesaver onto the string.

• Station 2: Join the four pieces of LEGO.

• Station 3: Peel a Post-It Note off the stack and print your name on it.

• Station 4: Fold a sheet of paper and place it inside the envelope.

3. It’s not easy is it? If you find the tasks too hard, use smaller or tighter gloves.

4. Try the tasks again. Did practicing improve your time?

How it Works

’Nauts prepare for working in space while they are still on Earth. They train on a life-size model of the space station. The really tricky part? The model is in a large tank of water! They wear the bulky suits they’ll use on a space walk, practice using tools, and just get used to working while floating! In space, ’nauts are always tethered to the space station with a line while they work. Talk about being tied to your work!
