Hidden Critters

Thousands of animals live in and on coral reefs like the Great Barrier Reef. The reef provides many nooks and crannies for animals to hide in. Other animals are camouflaged — or hidden — by their body shape or by the colours or patterns on their body. In this activity, you will design a camouflaged critter.

What You Need

• Art supplies
• Craft supplies

What to Do
1. Think of how you would make a fish or other animal that can hide somewhere in your house. For instance, you may want to design a simple paper fish with a pattern that would help it hide in the pattern on a couch or bedspread. Or, you may want to create an animal that blends into the leaves and stems of a potted plant.

2. Choose a place for your animal to hide. Use craft materials and art supplies to create your animal.

3. Hide your animal and then challenge someone to find it.

How it Works
There are hundreds of ways in which animals blend into their surroundings. Green, pencil-thin needlefish, for example, can easily hide in a clump of swaying seagrass. A flat, grey-brown sole (a kind of fish) is almost impossible to see against the sand on the ocean floor. Some animals use spots and stripes to hide. The stripes on this butterfly fish, as well as its flat shape, help it hide in a coral reef.
